ARC brings motion-capture robot fighting to Singapore

The Avatar Robotic Competition staged Singapore's first full-sized humanoid fight night on 7 October: pilots in motion-capture suits, G1s and T800s, 380-plus in the room. The promoter called it 'a demonstration of the idea'.

Singapore had its first full-sized humanoid fight night on Wednesday 7 October, and the promoter was the first to say what it was not.

"Last night was not yet the sport. It was a demonstration of the idea," said Antonio Gai, founder of ARC — the Avatar Robotic Competition, presented by the robotics company Katena. The event ran at *SCAPE's Ground Theatre on Orchard Link in front of more than 380 people.

The format is what sets ARC apart from most of this record. Its pilots do not use game controllers or VR headsets; they wear full-body motion-capture suits, and the robot copies them in real time. Two weight classes: Unitree G1s as lightweights, EngineAI T800s — 1.73 metres, 75 kilograms — as heavyweights. The pilots were professional martial artists and athletes: Sham Raaj, Eugene Chung, Lukas Leasure and Eric Lofstedt.

Two teams, Iron Fang and Steel Shadow, fought in a survival format. The moment of the night by the promoter's own account was Leasure's G1 knocking down Steel Shadow's robot. ARC has not named an overall winner, so neither does this record.

Eugene Chung's name will be familiar: four days earlier he fought on Shadow Combat League's New Dawn card in Kuala Lumpur. He is, as far as this record knows, the first pilot to appear for two different promotions in one week.

ARC is not new. Its "Season Zero" ran in New York on 5–6 June, and its site carries pilot registration and season rules — but no calendar. Gai says more international showcases are coming.

It also was not Singapore's only robot fight this week. The AICON conference stages its own Robot Fighting Championship tonight, 9 October, at the same venue — two EngineAI T800s with VR-headset pilots, Chung again among them. Nothing found so far connects the two promotions beyond the building and the pilot.
